Pecans aren’t technically nuts, they are actually “drupes,” considered the fruit of a tree similar to peaches and plums. Pecans are related to walnuts. Pecan trees only produce nuts every two years and pecans trees are native to the United States. There are over 1,000 different varieties of pecan nuts. April 14th is National Pecan Day in the United States. Astronauts took pecans to the moon two times in the Apollo space mission. July 12th is national pecan pie day in the United States.Before a shelled pecan is ready to be sold, it must first be cleaned, sized, sterilized, cracked and finally, shelled. Can you imagine a pecan skyscraper? It would take 11,624 pecans, stacked end to end, to reach the top of the Empire State Building in New York City

How to Store and Select

In order to keep pecans fresh place them in an airtight container and store them in the refrigerator or freezer. Bring the pecans to room temperature or cook them right away whenever you are ready to indulge in them, no need to thaw them. Shelled pecans can be kept in the refrigerator for about nine months and when stored in the freezer can last for about 2 years. It is best to use sealed plastic bags when storing pecans in the freezer. Do not expose pecans to direct sunlight or light as this may reduce the shelf life. Freeze your pecan in serving size bags, this way you can take out only what you will use and extend the shelf life of your pecans.
