Stroopwafel, originating from the Netherlands, stroopwafels have become so popular that they can be found nearly anywhere. What is a stroopwafel exactly? A stroopwafel is a sweet, thin, round waffle cookie. Found between the crisp cookies is a layer of caramel, holding the two together.
This sweet treat is delicious, but how exactly do you eat it? Well, there are many different ways you can eat a stroopwafel! Before we discuss the abundance of ways you can enjoy a stroopwafel, let’s have a little history lesson and learn more about what exactly a stroopwafel is, and how they are made.
All About Stroopwafels.
In Dutch, the word stroopwafel translates to “syrup waffle”.
Making these syrup waffles is actually rather simple! Many different recipes can be found, but they all include making your own simple batter, and homemade caramel to go in between your waffles. Traditionally a pizzelle iron is used to make them so thin, but you can use a regular waffle iron, or even find household pizzelle irons online.
Dutch folklore tells us that stroopwafels first made an appearance in the late 18th century by bakers who were trying to repurpose baking scraps. They popularized so quickly that by 1960 there were 17 stroopwafel factories in Gouda, South Holland alone.
How Do You Eat a Stroopwafel?
Eating this tasty treat can be just as fun as making them, because they are so versatile. There is a traditional way to eat it, but as it spread throughout the world many different ways were developed. Now it is just up to you to choose what way you want to try first!
- With a hot drink
If you choose to start with the most traditional way, you first need
to get yourself a hot drink! Most times people choose hot chocolate or coffee! Once you have your hot drink, you place your stroopwafel right on top, and allow the steam from your beverage to warm up the caramel. Once it has melted, enjoy the gooey and delicious treat with your drink!
- Straight out of the package
This is definitely the easiest way! You can take it straight out of the wrappers and enjoy it the way it is. If you want to try it warm, you can even place it in the microwave, or a toaster oven, for a few seconds to still get that softness and warmth.
- Enjoy it with ice cream
Serving ice cream with stroopwafels is a great way to enjoy the taste along with a variety in texture. Break them up and place them on top, making sure each bite gets a great crunch, and a great amount of caramel sweetness! If breaking them up isn’t your thing, use them as the base for an ice cream sandwich instead.
- Add them to baked goods
Similarly to the ice cream method, adding them to baked goods is a good way to introduce the flavor while adding a varying texture. They can top cupcakes, be used as layers in cakes, added to cookies, or even be added to turtle brownies.
-
Make smores
Normally we wedge chocolate and marshmallows between graham crackers, but we suggest replacing those crackers with a pair of stroopwafels instead! The warmth of the roasted marshmallow will heat up that caramel, making every bite sweet and caramelly.
- Dip them in chocolate
This is not only tasty, but a fun activity too! Lay out some different
melted chocolate options, and a plethora of toppings, and dip away. Try chocolate chips, coconut shreds, sprinkles, or nuts. Not only does this add even more flavor, but it makes them adorable too! Add them to gift baskets or charcuterie boards after dipping them.
Our original question was how do you eat a stroopwafel? I think we successfully answered that, and gave a handful of ideas for when you get ahold of your own batch of stroopwafels. Try them all out and decide which is your favorite, or even come up with your own ways to enjoy them!
