What Are Strawberries?

Strawberries are the fruit of the Fragaria genus of Rosaceae

flowering plants. Despite their name, they are not berries. Scientists classify strawberries as an “accessory aggregation” fruit. An ovary from the strawberry plant is each of the visible seeds on the outside of a strawberry, and each ovary contains a seed.

Different Types Of Strawberries

There are three types of strawberries. Such as-

  • Strawberries that ripen in June take around ten days to harvest. They’re the most widely available strawberry cultivar.
  • Strawberry plants that bear fruit year after year can produce two harvests: one in the spring and one in the late summer or early fall.
  • Day-neutral strawberries have a long growing season that might start as early as October. In temperatures as low as 35 degrees Fahrenheit, these perennial strawberry plants can blossom and bear fruit. Day-neutral strawberries don’t need to be in the light all day. Their name comes from the fact that they can grow regardless of the quantity of sunshine they receive. They’re quite little.

Growing And Harvesting

The Greeks and Romans revered wild strawberries for their medicinal properties. The red fruits can be found in the margins of fourteenth-century monks’ illuminated manuscripts. There were 12,000 strawberry plants in King Charles V’s royal gardens.

In the late eighteenth century, garden strawberries were originally planted in Brittany, France. The initial harvest was a hybrid of Fragaria virginiana from North America and Fragaria chiloensis from Chile.

Strawberries come in a variety of cultivars that thrive in a variety of temperatures and situations. Strawberries grown commercially are accessible outside of the traditional strawberry season. These are typically manufactured from the Fragaria and ananassa species. Strawberry plants may grow in a variety of soil types, although sandy loam soil produces the best results. California and Florida produce the majority of commercial strawberries in the United States.

  • The matted row system, in which the plants are split into Dried-strawberries-perpsective-www Lorentanuts Com Dried Strawberriesrows to allow the roots to disseminate runners, is used to grow June-bearing strawberries. These runners, also known as stolons, can spread and form new plant offshoots.
  • The hill method, often known as “the mound system,” is used to develop day-neutral and everbearing strawberries. The plants are growing in raised beds. Per hill, there are usually two rows of plants in a staggered configuration. The runners of the plants are removed in this approach, which allows the mother plants to retain more productive energy, resulting in more flower stalks on each plant.

Drying Process of Strawberries?

Dehydrating is probably the oldest method for preserving goods, and it’s quite easy to do: simply remove all of the water, and the food won’t deteriorate. It’s particularly effective with water-heavy fruits like strawberries. Dehydrated strawberries via evaporation are smaller, harder, and have a more concentrated flavor. They can range from chewy to downright crunchy. Dried strawberries from L’Orenta are great with cereal, granola, trail mix, and on a cheese board or as a healthful snack on their own.

You should wash and dry your berries. Remove the green tips or hull them.

Then, cut the berries into 1/8-inch thick slices. To ensure that the slices dry uniformly, try to make them as even as possible.

Now, arrange the sliced strawberries on dehydrator trays in a non-overlapping pattern. This improves ventilation and enables optimal drying. You can either dry them naturally or in the oven.

A Simple Recipe Using Strawberries And Dried Strawberries

You can use L’Orenta’s dried strawberries to garnish savory salads or buttermilk pancake stacks. They’re great with a glass of Champagne or as a topping for a tart, and you can even make a frozen drink out of strawberries. So try ice cream with strawberries.

You can puree half of the strawberries in a food processor or blender. Over medium heat, combine 2 cups heavy cream, 1/3 cup sugar, and 1 cup whole milk in a saucepan. Stir to dissolve the sugar. Add the strawberry puree to the mixture in a large mixing bowl. Cover and chill until cool in the refrigerator. Mix the strawberries. Fill an ice cream maker halfway with the ingredients and process according to the manufacturer’s directions. Add the dried strawberries from L’Orenta near the end of the process.
