Can Dogs Eat Dried Apricots? If you are a dog lover, you know just how hard it is to not give your dog a bite of whatever you are eating. Of course, we always want to make sure we are only feeding our pets foods they can actually have. If you have chosen dried apricots as your snack, can your dog snack with you? The short answer to this question is yes! Your dog can definitely enjoy this sweet fruit with you, given a few limitations!
Can Dogs Eat Dried Apricots?
Dried apricots contain a lot of nutrients that are actually very
beneficial for your dog! The biggest things you need to look for when sharing with your dog are the stems and pits. Both stems and pits do contain toxins that are harmful for dogs and their digestive systems.
That being said, so long as they are pitless and stemless, share away! Though they are a great source of vitamins for your dog, they cannot be a main portion of their diet. Dried apricots can make a fantastic treat, in moderation.
What benefits can my dog get from dried apricots?
A lot of the vitamins found within apricots can be very healthy for dogs! The high level of antioxidants can aid in preventing chronic illnesses while also preventing cell damage. Apricots also contain vitamins that can help with many other things such as:
- Eye health
- Skin and coat health
- Muscle and bone strength
- Heart health
- Blood pressure regulation
- Weight Loss
What do I do if my dog does eat a pit or stem?
While apricots themselves can be beneficial to dogs, the pits, stems, and leaves can be very toxic. If you suspect that your dog has somehow consumed the toxic parts, contact your local veterinarian clinic or call the pet poison line. Signs to look for in poisoning are:
- Dilated pupils
- Gasping for air
- Nausea or Vomiting
- Seizures
- Lost of consciousness
If this does happen, it can be treated. Most dogs recover very quickly from poisoning so long as they are treated as soon as you notice.
Next time you find yourself enjoying dried apricots, and your dog is giving you the puppy dog eyes, feel free to share a bit! Enjoy the benefits of fruit alongside your best friend!
Please contact your vet before giving your dog any of the mentioned foods above.
