Nuts have always been a part of Christmas traditions. So it’s really no wonder we enjoy them so much at this time of year! For many people, roasting chestnuts and snacking on seasoned nuts is a Holiday ritual.

Nuts are an indispensable part of the holiday traditions in many parts of the world. There are bowls of nuts on the table in several countries during this time. The delicious little morsels are a symbol of fruitfulness long associated with the winter festivities.
In the early days, when Christmas became popular in Germany and Austria, there was St. Nicholas. He arrived earlier, on his name day – December 6th – bringing nuts for the children as gifts.
When Christmas trees started appearing in homes in the 18th century, nuts were used to adorn them. In fact, old fashioned Victorian Christmas trees were decorated with gilded walnuts. They were tied with a red ribbon and hung to the tree, sometimes concealing a hidden fortune or small trinket. Then on the 12th day of Christmas the family would crack them open and enjoy them together.
A tradition we’ve kept to this day, stuffing stockings with little trinkets and treats is nothing new. As a matter of fact, this holiday ritual started back in the 12th century with French nuns. Inspired by the legend of St Nicholas, they began leaving stockings full of fruit and nuts at the houses of poor people.
