What is Chamoy?

Chamoy is the main ingredient used in making chamoy candies.

Chamoy is a spice, and it is prevalent in Mexico. If you’re American, then you know what we can’t do without our peanut butter. This is also how chamoy is to Mexicans. You can hardly find a Mexican kitchen that doesn’t have them. It is a combination of salt, sweetness, and hot spice. This is why they are often advertised as a kitchen condiment. Chamoy is a salted and pickled sour fruit that can be dried and used to make a sauce for candy.

While you may think that Chamoy has its origins in Mexico, the fact is that their origins are from China. It is popularly believed that Chamoy wasn’t common in Mexico until the 90s.

What Are Chamoy Candies?

Chamoy candies are sweet, salty, and spicy candies. They have all the flavors in one. They are widespread in the United States, China, and Mexico. These candies are made by drying fruit. Dried fruits such as mangoes, plums, and apricots are usually used to make them.

Where Is Chamoy From?

While it is generally accepted that Chamoy has its origins in China, there are still uncertainties about where it is really from. One origin hypothesis suggests that the name chamoy is derived from champoy, a word in the Philippines. Some say Chamoy’s origins are via the Filipino immigrants on the manilla galleons. The manilla galleons connected Mexico and the Philippines from 1565-1815.

The second hypothesis of the chamoy origin is through the 19th century, Chinese workers. The workers supposedly carried the tradition of the li hing mui as they dried and salted apricots. In this version of the origins, the name chamoy is derived from see mui. See mui is a catchall term for dried fruits. However, the problem with this origin hypothesis is that it does not say how the sweet, salt, and spicy food condiment made it to Mexico.
